Acknowledgement of Country

Sovereignty was never ceded. No treaty was ever signed. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the Traditional Custodians of the lands and waters on which this work is made, and that does not become less true with time, legislation or silence.

FREE 2B ME acknowledges Elders past, present and emerging. This body of work exists because systems cause harm when they ask people to become easier to accommodate. No community in this country has been asked to do that more often, or for longer, than First Nations peoples.

We hold that as a matter of practice, not sentiment.

So this is all of me. You may see me on stage. You may see me back in the day playing hockey for Australia Country. And you’ll also know that I’m the person who would, without a doubt, have left my hockey stick, shin pads and mouthguard in the hotel room.

You may see me travelling over to Paris and London and all these amazing places… But you’ll also see me with the daffodil lanyard on. I can’t even find my way from the airport through to the hotel without support.

So there’s so many different aspects of me, and if you focus on one part, you miss the other.

I’m a speaker, author, founder and mum.

I dance, sing and love things simply because I love them.

I can speak on an international stage and need help finding my way there.

My brain connects ideas incredibly quickly. Returning to the conversation and listening takes intention.

The ordinary days count too, including when I’m not at 100%.

I’m still growing, and already someone worth embracing.

I know what it costs to spend years trying to become easier for the world to hold.

I stopped trying to fix myself into acceptability and began building what I could not find: places, practices and pathways where people can belong without becoming less of themselves.

My story is about turning lived experience into infrastructure so our daughters inherit more than encouragement. They inherit different possibilities.
